The Wood County Master Gardener Program provides knowledge to and develops the leadership abilities of volunteers who, in turn, enable others to improve the quality of their lives by enhancing their home and community environments throught horticultural education and activities.

Do you want to be  Master Gardener?

Do you, or do you have friends or family who share a strong interest in gardening, a desire to sharpen their gardening skills, and a willingness to share their knowledge with others? If so, they may want to consider becoming a Wood County Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener.

The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer program which provides an extensive course in horticulture in exchange for a donation of volunteer hours to share your gardening knowledge with others through OSU Extension-sponsored activities.

The Wood County Master Gardener program consists of fifty hours of somewhat intensive basic horticultural knowledge taught on a senior high to a college 101 level course. In turn for this educational experience fifty hours of approved horticultural volunteer time must be given back to the community.

Currently there is an enrollment fee of $185 to cover cost of training materials, speakers and facillities, and for the Ohio State University mandatory volunteer criminal records check. Completed Application deadline for 2009 class is Friday November 14, 2008

State of Ohio Master Gardener Vision

The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Program is a volunteer educational program designed to meet the horticultural needs of citizens of Ohio. It's purpose is to train volunteers and utilize their expertise to teach people more about plants, their culture, their importance to the environment and to our quality of life. Master Gardener volunteers provide technical assistance to their county Extension office in order that consumer horticulture activities and programs can be more effectively and efficiently delivered to Ohio's gardening public. Master Gardener trainees receive formal training from their county Extension office covering a wide range of pertinent horticultural topics.  To become a Master Gardener, the trainee must complete the training program, pass the required exams, and volunteer a specified number of hours to Extension.  The trainee will have 50 training hours and 50 volunteer hours to complete their certification.

The volunteer commitment may be fulfilled in a number of different ways depending on the determined needs of the county.  After the completion of the initial required volunteer time, volunteers are encouraged to continue to assist with horticultural program delivery as an Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer.
